Screening: "Fenomenal, Rompeforma 1989-1996"
Fenomenal, Rompeforma 1989-1996, is a documentary about Rompeforma: Marató n de Baile, Performance & Visuales, the experimental Latinx dance and performance festival that took place in Puerto Rico from 1989-1996. Fenomenal, Rompeforma 1989-1996 features dozens of performances and commentary by many current leaders of the field, and some who have, sadly, passed. Fenomenal intends to inspire younger generations of Latinx artists and cultural activists by providing evidence of the rich creative and artistic contributions of Latinx individuals to the American avant-garde.
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmakers, Puerto Rican dance artists/choreographers Merián Soto and Viveca Vázquez.
FREE to the public.
Organized by the Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance, with additional support from the Chicano Studies Research Center and Latina Futures, 2050 Lab, Center for the Study of Women/Streisand Center, Program of Caribbean Studies/Latin American Institute, UCLA Film and Television Archive, and Professor Robin Derby, Chair, Latin American Studies.
