Melissa Castillo-Garsow will perform a reading from her first volume of poetry, Coatlicue: Eats the Apple (VerseSeven, 2016). Castillo-Garsow is an East Harlem-based Mexican-American writer, poet, and scholar. She holds a PhD in American Studies and African American Studies from Yale University and is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History at Harvard University. Her current book project, "A Mexican State of Mind: New York City and the New Borderlands of Culture," examines the cultural productions of Mexican migrants in New York City within the context of a system of racial capitalism, including an exploitative labor market, criminalizing immigration policies, and racialized systems of surveillance. This event is organized by the UCLA Department of Spanish & Portuguese Department and co-sponsored by the CSRC.
