Covening: "Beyond Sanctuary"
Please join us at a convening to examine the problem and promise of sanctuary.
Sanctuary, as problem and promise, casts light on the place of racial others in the liberal democracies of the West. This convening marks the publication of Beyond Sanctuary: The Humanism of a World in Motion (Duke University Press, 2025), and anthology of scholarship that thinks across the United States and Europe to critically interrogate policies and philosophies of sanctuary and asylum. Taking place in occupied Los Angeles at a time of resurgent white nationalism, these dialogues are intended to resituate the imperial West in the global histories – and possibilities – of decolonization and abolition.
