Conference: Central American Refugees in Detention - Rethinking US Immigration

Event Date:
Thursday, September 17, 2015 -
9:15am to 7:00pm
Event Location:
UCLA Faculty Center - Sequoia Room
In recent years, dominant US sentiment about immigration has settled into two contradictory positions:  1) support for DREAM Act children, and 2) retributive positions toward their parents and other undocumented adults. In 2014, the massive detention of Central American refugees—many of them mothers and their children fleeing poverty and violence in their home countries—raised larger issues about US foreign and immigration policies relative to human rights. This conference brings together scholars, attorneys, and activists who have been effective in seeking justice for twenty-first century Central American refugees. The goal is to broaden the public understanding of this crisis, reframe the debates about immigration, and share effective tactics for social justice.

Keynote Speakers:

  • Denise L. Gilman, Professor and Director of Immigration Clinic, University of Texas School of Law
  • Peter A. Schey, Executive Director, Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law; Class Counsel on Behalf of Immigrant Minors, Flores v. Johnson
