Book Talk: Rómulo Bustos Aguirre Presents "Semantics of the World"

We are pleased to welcome Rómulo Bustos Aguirre, winner of the 2019 National Colombian Poetry Prize and one of the most outstanding contemporary poets writing in Spanish. In this event, we will celebrate the publication of Semantics of the World: Selected Poems (University of New Mexico Press, 2022), the first compilation of Rómulo’s poems published in English and which has been praised as “an exquisite translation of one of the most important Afro- Colombian poets writing today.” We will be joined by translators Nohora Arrieta Fernández (UCLA) and Mark Sanders (University of Notre Dame). Rómulo, Nohora, and Mark will discuss their collaboration and read a selection of poems, alongside members of the UCLA Department of Spanish & Portuguese.

A reception will be held following the conversation and readings.

Nos complace darle la bienvenida a Rómulo Bustos Aguirre, ganador del Premio Nacional de Poesía de Colombia (2019) y uno de los más destacados poetas contemporáneos escribiendo en español.

En este evento celebraremos la publicación de Semantics of the World (University of New Mexico Press, 2022), la primera recopilación de la poesía de Rómulo publicada en inglés y elogiada como “una traducción exquisita de uno de los poetas afro-colombianos más importantes escribiendo hoy”. Nos acompañarán los traductores Nohora Arrieta Fernández (UCLA) y Mark Sanders (University of Notre Dame). Rómulo, Nohora y Mark conversarán sobre su colaboración y leerán una selección de poemas en conjunto con miembros del UCLA Departamento de Español y Portugués.
