Event Date:
Monday, April 6, 2020 -
4:00pm to 6:00pm
Event Location:
CSRC Library - 144 Haines Hall

As part of the Albert M. Camarillo Lecture Series, the CSRC is pleased to welcome Carlos G. Vélez-Ibáñez, Regents’ Professor School of Transborder Studies and School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University. Among his former appointments, Vélez-Ibáñez, served as associate professor of anthropology at UCLA.

Vélez-Ibáñez will give the talk, "Reflections of a Transborder Anthropologist: From Netzahualcóyotl to Aztlán."

Says Vélez-Ibáñez, "Chicano Studies has been and many ways continues to be the core critical basis of my thinking.  It is  joined to anthropological ideas of culture, economy, ecology, politics, and certainly language and more importantly, to the application of this cemented hybridity to trying to deal with issues surrounding Mexican-origin populations from Netzahualcóyotl to Aztlán. Some applications have been of limited utility, modest success, and failure.  All in all, however, the reflections offered began a bit prior to my coming to UCLA but took early form and function here in the Chicano Studies Research Center at UCLA. Almost forty years later these continued forming and to different degrees are now congealed in the School of Transborder Studies at Arizona State University."

The book-length publication Reflections of a Transborder Anthropologist: From Netzahualcoyotl to Aztlán by Carlos G. Vélez-Ibáñez is forthcoming from University of Arizona Press, Fall 2020.

The CSRC holds the Carlos G. Vélez-Ibáñez Sterilzation Research Collection, which includes papers and notes on sterilization, fertility, and eugenics. It also contains material on Madrigal v. Quilligan, a 1978 lawsuit brought by ten Mexican-American women who had been sterilized without their informed consent.

This event is free and open to the public.

UCLA Chancellor Gene Block informed the campus community that effective March 11, UCLA is transitioning to online learning platforms and limiting the number of people on campus in order to curb the spread of COVID-19. These changes will continue until at least April 10.

While there are no confirmed cases at UCLA at this time, our event Reflections of a Transborder Anthropologist scheduled for April 6 has been postponed out of an abundance of caution.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we look forward to engaging with you when we reschedule for May.

Sincerely,
UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center
