Over the past five years, Chican@ poetics has been increasingly utilized as a mode of political activism. A growing number of poetry readings, chapbooks, magazine publications, and CDs of Latin@ writers reflect increasing identification with the political aspirations of the Chican@ movement. This roundtable discussion will be led by four poets currently working in South Texas—Christopher Carmona, Isaac Chavarria, Rossy Evelin Lima, and Gabriel Sanchez—and each with a different Chican@ identity: Xicanindio, inmigrante, poch@, and the “fluid” Chican@. The roundtable will ask, What has triggered such an interest in Chican@ poetics in recent times? What types of poetry, writing, and art are being created and what are the social factors that have led to this new Chican@ poetics? Audience participation is encouraged.
