Michael A. Olivas: "The Good, the Bad, the Ugly, and Undocumented College Students - 2012 State and Federal Developments"
Professor Olivas will discuss recent legislation and litigation addressing the rights of undocumented college students. He will compare states that have moved to incorporate undocumented college students with those that have enacted statutes or policies to restrict resident tuition or even enrollment. While New Jersey and Florida do not ban these students, they have engaged in practices that make it difficult, if not impossible for even U.S. citizens to attend college if their parents are out of state. At a federal level, even after the rollout in 2011, there are fewer than 300 DREAM Act-eligible recipients in the entire country, and very few have been given work authorization, leaving them in a more dubious situation than before they outed themselves, as many have done.
At the event, Olivas will sign his recent book, No Undocumented Child Left Behind: Plyler v. Doe and the Education of Undocumented Schoolchildren (NYU Press, 2012). Copies will be available for purchase.
