Media Artist Willie Varela, In Person

Event Date:
Saturday, February 22, 2014 -
5:00pm to 6:30pm
Event Location:
Vincent Price Art Museum, East Los Angeles College

In partnership with the Vincent Price Art Museum at East Los Angeles College, the CSRC is pleased to host a presentation by media artist Willie Varela, a pioneer in American avant-garde film. Varela's visit is in celebration of the new DVD Video Art by Willie Varela, released by CSRC Press. The DVD is the first compilation of works by the prolific Chicano filmmaker, and includes over six hours of material, from silent shorts created in the 1970s to an autobiographical feature-length film completed in 1989. The CSRC worked closely with Varela to produce this original collection. Varela’s videos emphasize the act of looking over storytelling and stress rhythm and repetition over linear development and direct associations, and have been screened at venues around the country, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Copies of Video Art by Willie Varela will be available for purchase at this event.

For directions, visit the VPAM website.
