Art Along the Hyphen: The Mexican American Generation opens October 14 at the Autry National Center. This exhibition explores a seminal but overlooked generation of artists who made their careers in Los Angeles between the early twentieth century and the rise of the Chicano art movement in the 1960s. From commercial illustrations that celebrated the mythic Californios to modernist art that engaged directly with the African American Civil Rights era, this exhibition pulls together 100 rarely seen paintings, sculptures, and archival documents to explore how these artists drew inspiration from both their Mexican heritage and American home.
