3:00pm to 5:00pm
Event Location:
CSRC Library - 144 Haines Hall

The CSRC is pleased to present a screening ofTransVisible: Bamby Salcedo's Story, a documentary film by Dante Alencastre on the life of renowned Los Angeles-based trans-Latina activist and leader Bamby Salcedo. Following Salcedo as she turns her daunting personal challenges and barriers into the very basis of her activism, the film shows Salcedo's unlikely and transcendent rise into becoming the effective social advocate and role model that she is today. Her work is shown giving voice and visibility to not only the transgender community but also to the multiple overlapping communities her life has touched (Latina, immigrant, HIV+, youth, and LGBT, among others). The film speaks to the extraordinary ability of the human spirit to turn unique challenges into strengths and how powerfully love can evolve through self, family, and community. TransVisible: Bamby Salcedo's Story premiered at L.A.'s Outfest in 2013.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Bamby Salcedo and director Dante Alencastre, plus a light reception. Alicia Gaspar de Alba, professor of English and Chicana/o and women's studies, is the faculty curator of this event.
