Latinx Studies Seed Grants

The UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center (CSRC) partnered with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Creative Activities (ORCA) to administer the  Latinx Studies Seed (LSS) Grants Program. These grants of up to $30,000 per recipient and supported through the HSI Infrastructure Initiative, were designed to launch and support innovative research and creative projects on topics related to Latinx populations in the United States, including Puerto Rico.

LSS grants could be used to advance a work-in-progress or to catalyze a new endeavor. Grants were allocated to a variety of projects, including, but not limited to: developing proof-of-concepts, collection of pilot data, archival research, drafting of white papers, study of campus climate issues, creation of functional prototypes, development of preliminary art and multimedia work, and training programs to increase the competitiveness of the research team for future funding. Principal Investigators had not previously been awarded major research funding for their proposed project.

Over the three years of the LSS grant program, a broad range of projects were supported pertaining to topics including labor organizing, youth civic engagement, childhood obesity, Alzheimer’s disease detection, health access in rural communities, digital humanities, and the economies of opportunity in lithium extraction.
