Project: “Colonial Guatemala, 1765-1835”
Writing a book on Guatemala during the period 1765-1835, her research is based on archived documents from this period, notably court cases containing testimonies by women and men of various ethnicities and social classes. These records enable Komisaruk to capture the words and lives of a largely illiterate population, including indigenous people (Indians), Afro-Central Americans, mestizos, and Spaniards. Her research also suggests new understandings of colonial Latin American gender roles, as it reveals that many more behaviors were accepted in reality than prescribed by the laws and other literature of the time.
