2003 Memoria, voz y patrimonio (MVP) Conference

Event Date:
Friday, August 15, 2003 - 8:00am to Sunday, August 17, 2003 - 5:00pm
Event Location:
UCLA Department of Information Studies
The Memoria, voz y patrimonio (MVP) Conference creates a unique opportunity and experience for educators, scholars, archivists, students, librarians, artists, community workers and community to share different experiences in documenting and using Latino heritage materials, and to introduce different perspectives to a dialog on the importance of archives and record keeping. Records, in whichever format, are essential for the Latino community to document and protect its rights, to capture its collective memory, and to ensure access to its cultural past, achievements and legacy.

CSRC personnel will participate extensively in the MVP conference program, including the plenary session presentation "An Archival Call to Action" which highlights the accidental nature of archiving and the challenge of preserving ephemera; "Perfect Memories and Dirty Laundry: Latino/a Filmmakers in the Archive" film screening; "The Chris Strachwitz Arhoolie Foundation's Frontera Collection of Mexican-American Sound Recordings"; "UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center Initiatives"; and "Women's Voices Women's Stories". CSRC Library and archives personnel contributed to the planning of the conference and organizing of the Exhibits and Poster Sessions. Library student volunteers will assist in documenting the conference and presentation of the Exhibits.

Keynote speakers include Tomás Benitez, Executive Director of Self-Help Graphics & Art, spoke on Accidental Legacy: Collection Chicano Culture, Art and Artifact; Roberto Rodriguez, journalist and co-author of the weeklyColumn of the Americas, dealt with Sacred Geography: Going Back to Where We Came From; and Moctesuma Esparza, Film and TV producer, focusing on the significant contributions of librarians and archivists in assisting Latino creators with research materials and the role of leaders, such as Dr. Arnulfo D. Trejo, to advance Hispanic Library Education. MVP is also the Sixth Institute of the Trejo Foster Foundation for Hispanic Library Education (TFF) http://www.tffoundation.org. TFF co-sponsored MVP along with REFORMA: The National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking http://www.reforma.org.

McFarland & Company will publish the proceedings; Clara Chu and Salvador Guereña will co-edit. The conference ended with a call for a second conference, and continued dialog among community, archivists and scholars, including a call to work on a "Memory Recovery Project", spearheaded by TFF, REFORMA and NACS (National Association for Chicana and Chicano Studies), to document nuestra memoria, voz y patrimonio.
