An essential poetry text in the American literary canon and the winner of several design awards.

"Some writers, however, looked further back to pre-Columbian times in Mexico for the connecting link between the past and the present. One of the writers who incorporated both social criticism and history was Alurista, who in 1971 published his first one hundred poems in a collection entitled Floricanto en Aztlán. In it, he draws on images from Aztec culture and Mayan mythology, bringing them together in jarring relation to the arid, sterile images of what he calls Anglo ?Amérika.? Alurista uses a mixture of Spanish and English, which further underscores the clash of images within each poem. He is best known for his delineation of a literary aesthetic based on the Indian model of flower and song, the Aztec notion of permanence within change. Out of all these explorations into the Mexican cultural past, Alurista helped foster the notion of ?Amerindia,? or the concept indicating the unification of all Indian peoples into one creative, political, and social impetus."
