CSRC Special Collections

Below are brief descriptions of archival and manuscript collections at the CSRC Library that do not yet have on-line finding aids. To access these special collections, please contact Manuscripts Processor Michael Stone at (310) 825-0648 or by email.

Collections with On-line Finding Aids Pending

VIVA Collection.

Collection of programs, outreach, flyers, original artwork of a Latina/o LGBTI Arts organization active in Los Angeles c.1980s-1990s. Members included Luis Alfaro, Roland Palencia and Monica Palacios. 11 boxes.

Elena Popp Papers.

Popp is a nationally known tenants' rights/housing activist and Legal Aid attorney. Her papers contain materials related to her participation in a multitude of social justice causes. She is a graduate of UCLA Law School.

Ester Hernández Collection.

Nineteen original prints by Chicana artist known for her cultural images including the famed "Sun Mad."

Lupe Anguiano Papers.

 

Carlos Vásquez Papers

Much of the collection consists of Chicano-related items in student newspapers. Other materials include pamphlets regarding politics, education and US-México relations. The majority of the articles found in this collection were published in the UCLA Daily Bruin and are related to UMAS (United Mexican American Students). 2 Boxes.

Devra Weber Papers

This collection consists of newspapers, magazines, pamphlets and miscellaneous articles. Alternative newspapers include The Movement and The Militant. The articles cover topics such as the Chicano Moratorium, Ruben Salazar, and the Chicano Movement. There are also articles from the Los Angeles Times on topics such as Chicanos in the Arts, Media, Education, Police, Politics, Prisons, Reapportionment, Theater, and Chicano events/issues at UCLA. 1 Box.

Ron López Papers (with Sleepy Lagoon materials)

Materials in this collection cover three time periods: the early 1920s & 1930s, the early 1940s, and 1969-78. The earlier material is made up primarily of journal articles on Mexican immigration and repatriation written by sociologists and social workers. The later material includes original letters involving the Los Angeles Police Department, the Sleepy Lagoon Defense Committee, and magazine and Mexican newspaper clippings. 12 Boxes.

Latino Community Development Archive

This collection consists of articles, proposals, studies and other publications related to economic development in the Latino community. Topics covered include: Business plans; Investments; Housing Development; Commercial Revitalization and Modernization; Employment Training; and Transit needs. Major Latino community development organizations are documented here. This materail was collected by Michael A. Esquivel. 3 Boxes.

Sterilization Archive (Velez)

This collection documents Chicanas and sterilization in Los Angeles County . Some of the material was used to support a court case and consists of articles from newspapers, magazines and journals related to female sterilization--particularly women in Latin America . Also included are personal affidavits on sterilization. Other documents contain information on genetics, eugenics, involuntary sterilization, contraception, health, fertility, sterilization regulation, family and population.

Joe Ortiz Papers

Joe Ortiz was born in California and is noted for his Chicano radio program on KABC from 1970-77. He  also taught at Ramona High School. Ortiz worked with the following Mexican American organizations: East L. A. Housing Task Force, Mexican American Research Association, and the Mexican American Youth Organization (not the same as MAYO in Texas). MAYO helped ex-pintos find employment and gain acces to formal education opportunities. The MAYO materials are from 1968. The collection contains correspondence, news clippings, announcements, photos, newsletters, and articles. 2 Boxes.

Chicano Studies Research Center Publications Unit Archive

This collection consists of original manuscripts that were submitted to the Chicano Studies Research Center Publications unit for possible publication in the journal Aztlán in the first three decades of the journal. The collection also inlcudes files regarding peer review evaluations. Since this collection includes confidential information, there is at this time, no public access. 61 Boxes.

Mexico-United States Relations Archive

This collection of articles on international, national, and local relations between the United States and México inlcudes issues of  politics, trade, economy and immigration. Documents include conference reports and newspaper articles. Other topics covered include Central American issues, international affairs, diplomatic relations and Chicanos. These materials were collected by Dr. Juan Gomez-Quiñones. 1 Box.

C.A.S.A.-HGT Papers (Centro de Acción Social Autónoma-Hermandad General de Trabajadores)

Documents in this collection represent the years just before and after CASA's demise. Although founded in 1968, the earliest materials of this organization are not included. This collection includes materials between 1975 and 1979. Besides articles on immigration and labor, the bulk of the collection is made up of organizational history. Issues of Sin Fronteras, the official newspaper of CASA, are included as are reading lists for members, policy statements, rules and guidelines, especially related to self-criticism, and brief histories of CASA. Though chapters of CASA existed in Chicago, San Antonio, San Jose, San Diego, and in Colorado, there are no documents from local chapters besides the Los Angeles chapter.

National Survey of People of Mexican Descent in the United States

This collection contains original survey documents from the National Survey of People of Mexican Descent in the United States. Includes coded histories. 51 Boxes

Chicano Studies Research Center : Juan Gomez-Quiñonez Papers

The information in this collection is composed of miscellaneous material from the Chicano Studies Research Center office files during the period that Dr. Juan Gomez-Quiñones served as Director of the Center. 12 Boxes.

Año Internacional de la Mujer de México

Description: This collection contains articles, pamphlets, newspapers, handouts, and othe publications related to International Women's Year (IWY) themes and women in general. The information relates to Chicanas, Latinas and women of color from other countries. *

Josefina Niggli Papers

Description: This collection consists of a number of miscellaneous books that were collected by Josephina Niggli. The books in this collection relate to women, love, cults, witchcraft, mysticism, and fortune telling through tarot cards and other themes. There is no personal information about Josephina Niggli in this collection. 2 Boxes.

Pedro J. González Papers

Gonzalez, was multifaceted: A telegraph operator for Pancho Villa during the Mexican Revolution; a radio personality and popular recording artist in Los Angeles; framed for political purposes and sent to San Quentin prison; a man fighting for the rights of the veteranos of the Division Del Norte who were seeking ejidos (plots of land) that they could own.This collection consists of his papers, correspondence, music, serialized fiction about him, and many photographs and photo montages documenting his many interests and those he collaborated with during his notable life. 17 Boxes.

Desegregation Collection

This collection contains articles, pamphlets, newspapers, newsletters, reports, and other publications on desegregation in the schools, the educational system, and the status of Chicanos and other students of color in segregated schools. The core material in this collection relates to the court case of Mary Ellen Crawford vs. the Board of Education. 7 Boxes.

Mexico I

This collection consists of articles, pamphlets, studies, organizations, and projects documenting such issues as Mexico, its history, culture, and politics. It also documents information on border-related issues between Mexico and the United States, on immigration, undocumented immigrants, on US-Mexico relations, and US-Mexico universities. 1 Box.

Mexico II

This collection consists of newspaper clippings, articles, pamphlets, and other publications related to the border region between Mexico and the United States . Ttopics covered in this collection include US-Mexico relations, politics, migrant workers, border issues, immigration, and undocumented migration to the United States, etc. 1 Box.

Higher Education Archive

This collection consists of materail on Chicanos in higher education and is composed of articles, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, and other publications. Within this collection there is information regarding the Bakke case, education, schools, and general information on education and Chicanos. Boxes.

Spanish Speaking Mental Health

This collection consists of occasional papers published by the Spanish Speaking Mental Health Center at UCLA. Includes monographs on bilingual education, acculturation, culture, support systems, interethnic marriages, psychological factors within the Chicano community, health care, etc. 2 Boxes.

Grace Montañez Davis Collection, 1973-1978

This collection consists of the materials accumulated by Grace Montañez Davis, who is best known as former Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles during the administration of Mayor Tom Bradley. The material relates to Davis' professional career and her activities as a public figure.

California Identity Project

The material in this collection relates to the California Identity Project. The pirncipal investigator was David Hayes-Bautista, former Director of the Chicano Studies Research Center. Includes pre-test questionnaires, surveys, and other miscellaneous information. A copy of the California Identity Project Research proposal is included in the collection. 44 Boxes.

UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center Library (Internal Files)

This collection includes the internal office files of the Chicano Studies Research Center. 32 Boxes.

SCR 43 Files

This collection contains the organizational files of the California Senate Concurrent Resolution 43. This resolution requested that the University of California document policy research efforts and resources relevant to the Latino community in California. 12 Boxes.

Mexico: Splendors of Thirty Centuries/Mexico: Esplendores de treinta siglos (Artes de Mexico Series)

This collection consists of pamphlets, articles, brochures, posters, flyers, books, and newspaper clippings relatyed to an exhibition brought to the United States from Mexico entitled: "Mexico: Splendors of Thirty Centuries/México (Esplendores de Treinta siglos) (Artes de Mexico series).

Chicano Moratorium Collection

This collection consists of articles, newspaper clippings, newspapers, flyers and photographs that relate to the Chicano movement/Chicano Moratorium. Most of the articles in this collection document the "August 29th" Movement and its commemoration. 1 Box.

Aida Hurtado Papers

This collection contains material related to the National

Association for Chicano Studies (NACS/NACCS) as well as information regarding a study on midwife practices ("Parteras" by Aida Hurtado). While most of the material in this collection consists of the original Partera interview schedules and questionnaires, this collection also contains information on Chicano/Latino conferences. This collection does not include personal information about Aida Hurtado. 13 Boxes.

Phi Kappa Psi Case- June 1979

This collection consists of newspaper articles, photographs, and general correspondence regarding the case of Phi Kappa Psi. In June 1979 UCLA fraternities held a party depicting stereotypes of Mexicans/Chicanos in racist and discriminatory ways. 1 Box.

National Association for Chicano Studies

The bulk of the material in this collection consists of flyers, articles, monographs, pamphlets, and brochures regarding the National Association for Chicano Studies (NACS/NACCS). Included in this collection are NACS bylaws and resolutions, proceedings, programs, and monographs. Also available are copies of papers submitted for a NACS individual student paper competition, memos and other miscellaneous correspondence. 2 Boxes.

Gente Pictures, La

The material in this collection consists of photographs that were taken and/or provided by La Gente, UCLA's Chicano student newspaper. The photographs are of La Gente staff throughout the years, and miscellaneous photographs related to stories covered in issues of La Gente. 1 Box.

Seminario Permanente de Estudios Chicanos y de Fronteras

This collection consists of papers, drafts, projects, proposals, etters, and other articles on different topics gathered by the Seminario Permanente de Estudios Chicanos y de Fronteras. Topics covered in this collection are immigration, day laborers, street vendors, undocumented workers, undocumented women, and miscellaneous information regarding the border issues between Mexico and the United States. 1 Box.

Reflecciones (Videotape Series)

This collection contains copies of all videos in the Reflecciones

series that aired on KABC, Channel 7 in Los Angeles, CA in 1972, 1973, and 1974. The videotapes in this collection document the history, culture, political and social aspects of the Chicano community. 20 Boxes.

Miscellaneous File

The miscellaneous material includes: a folder that contains the originals of poems dedicated to people in Mexico and Los Angeles from as early as 1919; a copy of the first Chicano mural painted and donated to the Chicano Studies Research Center at UCLA along with a description of the mural; an issue of a magazine called Siempre (1973) that has a focus on Chicano artists, featuring Saul Solache; a folder on "Animal Attraction" a film presented at UCLA...
