Reception to Honor Mario T. García

In March 1968 thousands of students in East Los Angeles walked out of their classes to protest academic inequalities in LAUSD high schools. Led by educator and activist Sal Castro, among others, these “Blowouts” helped organize the Chicano community into a political force. In Blowout! Sal Castro and the Chicano Struggle for Educational Justice, author Mario T. García, professor of Chicano studies at UC Santa Barbara, presents an oral history with Castro, in which he talked about his role in this transformative movement.

This reception will honor García, who has given the UCLA Library audiotapes from interviews with Castro and others chronicling their experiences during the blowouts.
