Exhibition Reception: "Young Workers Rising"

Event Date:
Thursday, April 9, 2015 -
12:00pm to 2:00pm
Event Location:
CSRC Library - 144 Haines Hall

Join us for a reception for the CSRC library exhibition Young Workers Rising: Demonstrating a Movement for Better Wages, curated by senior undergraduate student Alfredo Alvarez.

Photographs are featured in this exhibition focusing on the labor movement of a young workforce in Los Angeles today. Young workers in retail and fast-food industries are beginning to organize and form workers' associations such as “Fight for $15” and “Our Walmart” to achieve their demands. These associations are leading the charge against low-wages and for better working conditions. Photographs in this exhibition capture the demonstrations and successful actions of a social movement in progress, including workers being arrested for non-violent acts of civil disobedience. Young Workers Rising also discusses memes, which have served as a powerful tool to communicate messages using social media, a communication tool of choice.

Rotating exhibitions drawn from CSRC collections are on display inside the library and in the vitrine near the front entrance. All exhibitions are free to the public and viewable during regular library hours, Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Young Workers Rising is on view through May 1, 2015.
